Is it bad to wear contacts everyday?

It is becoming more common for people to wear contact lenses regularly over the past few years, which leads to the obvious question of: Is it safe to wear contact lenses every day or not?

Is Wearing Contact Lenses Every Day Safe?

Generally speaking, it’s safe to wear contact lenses all day, every day (as instructed by your eye doctor and the directions provided with your lenses.) The amount of time you can wear the lenses will vary based on the lens type. (Daily lenses are usually recommended to be worn between eight and 16 hours at a time over the course of a day, while extended wear lenses can also be worn overnight for much longer periods (the precise length of time will vary.)

However, some people may have more sensitive eyes, which may require them to shorten the amount of time per day they wear their lenses, or look into other vision correction options which may work better for them.

Many patients will benefit from taking breaks from contact lens wear, which will give their eyes a chance to receive the oxygen they need. Many optometrists recommend removing contact lenses at the end of the day and giving the eyes a chance to rest.

Types of Lenses

It’s important to remember that there are different types of contact lenses which are used in different ways.

If you experience any complications from contact lenses remove your lenses and call our office to speak with our eye doctor.

Remove lenses and call us if you experience:

  • Redness, inflammation, or irritation,
  • Eye pain
  • Photophobia or sensitivity to light
  • Blurry vision or vision that is geting worse after prolonged use of contact lenses
  • Dry eye or feeling like something is stuck in your eye (gritty sensation)
  • Excessive tearing or watery eyes
  • If you have discharge of any kind

Disposable contact lenses

Daily lenses can be used only once and then thrown away. Each day, a brand new pair of lenses is used with a daily disposable routine. The prolonged use of daily disposable contact lenses may result in eye discomfort, dry eye, hypoxia, and inflammation or other complications. At the end of each day, discard your daily disposable contact lenses. Typically daily lenses allow a greater amount of oxygen to permeate, however overuse can lead to serious issues, so always follow your doctor’s recommendations.

Weekly contact lenses

Weekly, bi-monthly, or monthly contact lenses are worn for a week to up to a month before being discarded. Unlike daily lenses, weekly lenses do not require replacement every day, making them more convenient for people who aren't morning people. Weekly lenses are also less expensive and generate less waste. Weekly lenses may be less breathable, so overuse should be avoided. Overuse of contact lenses can also lead to a buildup of deposits on the lens, always follow your eye doctor's instructions in order to ensure that your lenses do not cause discomfort.

Don’t Ignore Contact Lens Discomfort

Don’t Ignore Contact Lens Discomfort

If you experience any sort of eye irritation or pain while wearing your contact lenses, or are having blurry vision, then you should remove your contact lenses immediately. In many cases, simply taking a short break from wearing them will resolve the issue, but if the problem persists, then you should contact our eye doctor. What starts off as minor irritation can become something more severe and difficult to treat if ignored.

Common Questions

Wearing contacts while sleeping can be dangerous, even if you just take a nap. Taking occasional or accidental naps while wearing your contacts can increase your risk of infection. It is safer to remove your contact lenses before falling asleep if you think there is a possibility that you may do so.

Summary

There is no inherent problem with wearing your contact lenses every day, provided you follow the directions received when you were prescribed them and purchased them. Much of the time, discomfort experienced while wearing your lenses does not mean there’s a larger problem, but since there is a potential for more serious complications it’s very important to speak with our optometrists to make sure it does not become a bigger problem.
